Your End of Year Home Maintenance Checklist

As 2026 approaches, it’s the perfect time to get your home ready for the winter season. With just a few simple steps, you can keep things warm, safe, and welcoming as we head into the new year. Here’s a quick checklist to help you get started.

1. Seal Up the Drafts

Ever feel a cold breeze sneaking into your home, even with the windows closed? That’s your house telling you it needs some attention! Check around doors, windows, and even electrical outlets for drafts. Weatherstripping or caulking can make a huge difference and it’s an easy fix you can handle yourself.

2. Inspect Your Heating System

Make sure your heater is in good shape. Change the filter and schedule a repair or professional inspector if you haven’t yet. A little maintenance now can save you from expensive repairs or freezing nights in the future.

3. Clean the Gutters

Leaves and debris can clog them up, causing water to back up and freeze, which can damage your roof or siding. Check or hire someone to help. Your home will thank you!

4. Protect Your Pipes

Frozen pipes can be a homeowner’s nightmare. To avoid this, wrap exposed pipes in insulation and disconnect garden hoses from outdoor faucets. Don’t forget to shut off exterior water lines if your area gets below freezing.

5. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

With heaters running and fireplaces roaring, winter is when these detectors work overtime. Replace the batteries and test each one. It’s quick, easy, and could save lives.

6. Check your Fireplace

Make sure it’s ready for those cozy winter nights. Sweep out any ash, check the chimney for blockages, and consider hiring a professional to inspect it if you use it often.

7. Stock Up on Essentials

Snowstorms or power outages may occur. Make sure you’ve got the basics on hand: things like flashlights, batteries, blankets, and a stash of non-perishable food.

8. Plan for Big Projects

Thinking about selling your home or doing some renovations? Winter is the perfect time to plan. Start researching contractors, gathering ideas, or even reaching out to a real estate expert for advice.

Taking care of these things now will leave you with peace of mind all winter long and will set you up for a bright, happy new year. I’m Shirin Rezania Ramos, and I’d love to help make your next move as smooth as possible.
