Carmel Valley in San Diego has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the early 1900s. The area’s name is derived from the Catholic Sisters of Mercy, who established a dairy farm and monastery in the lower McGonigle Canyon, naming a nearby hill Mount Carmel. When Robert Stevens acquired the farm in the 1940s, he changed its name to Mount Carmel Ranch, which led to the attachment of the name Carmel to the valley. The community officially formed in 1975, and construction began in 1983, transforming farms into residential neighborhoods. Despite being initially known as North City West in the master plan, residents adopted the name Carmel Valley in 1991, solidifying its place as one of the newer and vibrant neighborhoods of the City of San Diego, California.
