San Diego’s Citywide Electric Vehicle Network

Source: Del Mar Times

San Diego is taking a significant step by creating a citywide network of electric vehicle chargers, from Rancho Bernardo and Carmel Valley in the north to Otay Mesa and San Ysidro in the south, to promote electric car ownership, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and transition the city’s 5,000-vehicle gas-powered fleet to electric. The initiative plans to install chargers at every city library, recreation center, and beach within two years, expanding to every city building within five years. This move aligns with the city’s climate action plan, aiming to have 16 percent of all miles driven by zero-emission vehicles by 2030 and a fully electric fleet for light-duty vehicles by 2035. Despite concerns about potential underutilization and financial liabilities, the initiative holds promise for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation landscape in San Diego.
