Getting Ready for Wildfire Season in San Diego County

In San Diego County, the wildfire season has become a year-round event due to climate change. However, summer marks the peak of this season with high risks due to dry vegetation, low humidity, and strong Santa Ana winds. This year, we may see more fires because of last winter’s dryness and the lush growth from previous wet years. We hope these events won’t happen but it will not hurt and might save lives (and properties) if we are prepared. Here are some simple steps to prepare:

1. Strengthen Your Home
– Clear the area around your house to reduce fire risk.
– Use resistant materials for gutters, downspouts, and decks.
– Install vents that resist flames and embers.
– Ensure your roof has the highest fire rating.

2. Stay Informed
– Sign up for AlertSanDiego to get notifications about wildfires, evacuations, and Red Flag Warnings. You can receive texts, calls, and emails.
– You can also download the SD Emergency app for updates and tools.
– Consider using wildfire tracking apps too for additional information.

3. Prepare an Emergency Kit
– Pack enough supplies for at least 72 hours like water, non-perishable foods, blankets, first aid kit, important documents, flashlight, dust masks, cash, and prescription medication

4. Create a Wildfire Action Plan
– Decide on meeting points, escape routes, and pet arrangements.
– Set up a contact point outside the high-risk area to stay in touch if phone networks fail.

With these steps, you can better protect your home and loved ones during the wildfire season. Stay prepared, stay informed, and stay safe!
