Ocean Crest Estates is a residential pocket of Cardiff-by-the-Sea just east of I-5, centered on Ocean Crest Road, Cathy Lane and Orkney Lane. Single-family homes on Ocean Crest Road were built between 1957 and 1964, with Cathy Lane homes dating to roughly 1958–1960. The attached, townhome-style homes on Orkney Lane came later, around 1967–1968, and there are about 27 addresses on that street. Exteriors follow a mid-century look, mostly single-story ranch and beach-cottage styles, and listings describe them as mid-century beach cottages. Orkney Lane homes are typically 2–3 bedrooms (a few have 4) at about 816-1,268 square feet on lots of roughly 0.07–0.08 acre. The detached homes generally offer 2–6 bedrooms and about 936-2,535 square feet, many on lots of about 6,400-7,000 square feet.
Residents get a quiet, suburban feels of Cardiff with I-5 access via Santa Fe Drive and Mackinnon Avenue, and downtown Cardiff and the beaches are about a mile away. Nearby are Cardiff State Beach, San Elijo State Beach, the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and Nature Center, and Swami’s. Highway 101 has Fish 101, Pacific Coast Grill and Ki’s, plus Seaside Market and VG Donut & Bakery. For bigger shopping trips, the Encinitas Village Center has a Trader Joe’s, and there’s Cardiff Sports Park on Manchester Avenue. Elementary students are served by the Cardiff School District: Cardiff School and Ada Harris School. For the older grades, the San Dieguito Union High School District’s boundary map lists Oak Crest Middle School and La Costa Canyon High School for the Cardiff district.
